Community Driven Development

Boulder has a vibrant history of citizen engagement when it comes to growth and development issues. From PLAN-Boulder County’s inception, we’ve been dedicated to helping ensure that the people who live here and care deeply about our community –not corporate interests – decide the fate of our town.

We believe that all voices should be heard during land-use debates and that means speaking for the environment. PLAN-Boulder County believes that environmental protections and quality-of-life should trump corporate profits.

We strive to engage the broader community in conversations about the environment, climate change,  water, development, and land-use decisions that will affect us all. We advocate for solutions  that create the greatest good for Boulder County's environment and for the people who live in it.

Issues and positions

Open Space

Stewardship of our unique natural surroundings for future generations is our highest priority.

PLAN-Boulder County leads Boulder's efforts to preserve open space in order to conserve wildlife and plant ecosystems, preserve agricultural land, preserve the natural beauty of the surrounding area and to prevent sprawl so that future generations may experience what the present and past generations have enjoyed. In 1968, PLAN-Boulder led the effort to create a funded, sustainable open space program that could continue to purchase land to achieve these goals.

Today, we all who live in or visit Boulder reap the benefits of that earlier foresight. But there are challenges posed by increased use of open space as population grows and from climate change. The future of our open space will be determined by our stewardship of these lands and ecosystems.

As less money is available for land purchases, PLAN-Boulder County continues to support conservation goals by emphasizing maintenance and nurturing of the lands we have in our Open Space system and advocating priority emphasis on conservation of wildlife, plant ecosystems, and wetlands. We support low-impact, non-mechanized recreational uses where they cause no net loss of habitats or diminishment of ecosystems.
