City council makes profound decisions about the future of Boulder and Boulder needs a change of leadership and direction. The current Boulder City Council, dominated by self-described “progressives,” has made terrible decisions to cede local control over land use and planning to the state and to increase occupancy without requiring affordability.
Boulder needs a city council that listens and respects all, a council that values Boulder’s parks, open space, public lands, and environment, and leaders who are not ideologues.
PLAN-Boulder County Ballot Measure Endorsements
YES ON 1 A
PLAN-Boulder County supports the Open Space Sales and Use Tax Extension and Revenue Change to acquire, improve, manage and maintain open space lands and other open space property interests. Boulder County and Boulder City Open Space lands are critical representatives of what remains of our natural environment that is being threatened and destroyed at an alarming rate throughout the Mountain west. PLAN-Boulder remains very concerned about the County’s abandonment of long-standing conservation easements, and strongly recommends that the County Commissioners make a commitment to the voters to overturn this practice to keep faith with those who support Open Space taxes.
YES ON 1 B
PLAN-Boulder County supports the Affordable Housing Tax Extension and Revenue Change to extend the existing countywide sales and use tax for the purposes of funding existing and additional affordable and attainable housing and related supportive services within Boulder County. This tax offers the potential of creating more affordable housing county wide. We base our support for this tax on the regional housing partnership goal that was adopted by every municipality in our county. The collaborative approach to the issue of housing affordability in Boulder County makes a strong case for voters to approve the tax.
YES ON 2 A
PLAN-Boulder County supports Ballot Issue 2A to extend the existing .15% City Sales and Use Tax with 50% for General Fund Purposes and 50% to Support Arts, Culture and Heritage. With increased funding, Boulder’s large arts and culture community could be more sustainable and better able to create and present their work to the community. PLAN-Boulder particularly supports the expansion of arts education for our children. This is critical because schools are always under pressure to direct resources away from arts education.
YES ON 2 B
PLAN-Boulder County supports Ballot Question 2B to amend sections 27, 37, 39, 46 and 57 of the city Charter related to election administration matters. These amendments include allowing mayor and council petitions to be carried outside the municipal building, allowing the city clerk additional processing time for petitions and clarifying the language that provides that state law governs amendments to the city’s Charter. Two are relatively minor and do not unduly restrict the citizens ability to stand for election to city council or to petition our elected officials. The third amendment is an important clarification that has been a source of confusion.
YES ON 302— Safe Zones 4 Kids
This citizen-initiated measure would enact a prioritized enforcement zone of 500 feet from school property lines and 50 feet from multi-use paths and sidewalks. These areas have become increasingly unsafe for all Boulder residents. While many of us can avoid these areas, many of our kids must use them to get to school and to participate in school activities. Safety for kids should be our highest priority as a community. In addition, it is irresponsible to close our eyes to the damage encampments impose on Boulder’s environment and the harm they cause to the health of people who live in them. We support Safe Zones 4 Kids as a measure that protects the safety of everyone in our community.
